2. What business advice would you give today to your 20 year-old self?
Don’t listen to others and act now. I remember when I was in high school and the teachers were pressuring us to pick a career path, and I really didn’t know what I wanted to do, but i did know one thing, I wanted to have my own business.
The teachers and guidance counselors thought I was essentially being ridiculous and they told me that the best thing for me was to get a job with a “good company,” maybe one that had benefits and security.
In the small galley kitchen of our rental townhouse, my mom, seeing all the frustration and anxiety that this decision was causing me, suggested that I focus my school courses on becoming a secretary. I looked at her with disbelief and said, “I don’t want to be a secretary, I want to have one!” She laughed heartily.
I felt defeated and didn’t know what else to do, and enrolled in business courses.
I spent years working for other people. Believing that I had to learn more, do more and be more. I’ve wasted a lot of time by working in other people’s businesses before I switched my focus to work on my own business. If I could go back and give myself advice, I would say “In a nutshell, here’s the secret to happiness, stop listening to other people’s ideas of you and act now on your own dreams. You’ll learn everything you need in the process of building YOUR business.”
3. What would people be surprised to know about you?
After graduating college, I moved to England and worked in a little pub in a place called Camberley serving Guinness and pints of cider. Then I backpacked through Europe, Indonesia, Malaysia and Australia for almost a year and a half before moving to Ottawa.
