On the heels of International Women’s Day – and March being Endometriosis Awareness Month, I thought it fitting to tell you about a doctor at The Ottawa Hospital who is putting time and energy into women’s health both professionally and personally.  That physician – is Dr. Sony Singh.  He is one of the strongest advocates women in our region have for the best possible treatment of gynaecological issues.

Did you know that an estimated 176 million women worldwide suffer from endometriosis? Here are a few facts and figures:

  • Is experienced by women of reproductive age.
  • Is the growth of tissue, similar to the kind that lines a woman’s uterus, but is found elsewhere in her body.
  • Causes chronic pelvic pain and is sometimes associated with infertility.

Many women don’t realize their pain is not normal and that it can be treated. That’s why Dr. Singh, the Director of Minimally Invasive Gynaecology at The Ottawa Hospital is raising awareness about the condition so that more women will find an end to their unnecessary suffering.

During the Tamarack Ottawa Race Weekend Dr. Singh, his staff members and even some of his patients are lacing up and taking part in the Run for a Reason. The Women’s Health Matters team is raising funds for research, patient care and nursing education.

“The team name says it best: Women’s Health Matters,” says Dr. Singh.  “Once again, we’re spearheading a drive to support our colleagues, nurses, staff and learners of the Shirley E. Greenberg Women’s Health Centre at The Ottawa Hospital. Innovative care has made us a regional and nationally recognized centre of excellence.  Our mission is to provide each patient with the world class care, exceptional service and compassion we would want for our loved ones.”

This year’s Run for a Reason goal is $25,000!  The team wants to top the $24,000 raised last year.

Team members are hoping for some support to help them get there. To make a donation, visit the Women’s Health Matters team fundraising page.  If you want to take it a step further and join them register online when you visit their fundraising page.

We’re glad to have Dr. Singh and his team in our corner!
