Join the WBN in giving back to women in our community

We have recently entered a new relationship with the charity Healthy Women Healthy Community. On June 10, from 12-3pm, there was a members-only lunch where we announced this exciting new partnership. The lunch featured an afternoon filled with the Ottawa Hospital’s top medical experts and several celebrity guests discussing important topics around women’s health.

This is one of the many benefits WBN members receive. Visit our website to find out more about how you can become a member today!

It’s that time of year when we have our WBN membership drive. The WBN is going through an exciting evolution that you won’t want to miss. The executive and many committees that keep WBN going strong have excellent ideas to bring new benefits to members and create an even stronger, more supportive (and vibrant) community promoting the work and leadership of Ottawa’s brightest businesswomen – that includes you!

Visit the WBN website today to join and be a part of a truly fabulous community of businesswomen in Ottawa!

Strut your Stuff

If you haven’t made it out to a Breakfast Mix and Mingle in a while, be sure to sign up for June. Our theme this month is “health and wellness” and Lydia DiFrancesco is going to spend 10 minutes talking to us about ways we can improve our health and wellness – a crucial topic for busy women who need to keep going.

It’s looking a lot like golf season out there – WBN Tournament, June 25th

The weather has finally turned back to sunny, warm days. That means it’s time for the WBN’s annual golf tournament. The WBN Annual Charity Golf Tournament is celebrating it’s 20th year on June 25th. To celebrate this event, we are offering participants the opportunity to purchase a plum colored technical golf shirt with the WBN logo imprinted on the sleeve. Women’s and men’s sizes are available. Shirts will be provided at registration if ordered by June 16th. If you’d like to sponsor, there are still some opportunities available. Please contact Christina Nesrallah for more information (Email: Christina.nesrallah@dfsin.ca, Cell: 613-265-2652, Office: 613-829-8855 ext. 255).

Also for your convenience, purchase  your ‘Master Pass’ to all extra activities planned for the day rather than paying for each event individually. These events include: seated massage, putting contest, beat the pro contest, ticket to the 50/50 draw and a draw prize ticket.

Don’t forget; if you’re going to play, register today! We’ll have a wonderful time with our host Sandra Plagakis from Kiss 105.3 FM’s morning show!

Are you ready for CASL (Canadian Anti-Spam Legislation)?

During our May Breakfast Mix and Mingle, Karen Wilson of Wellman Wilson Consulting discussed the new legislation and its impact on businesses who sent commercial electronic messages. Karen is compiling a blog post and list of resources for WBN members. Email her at Karen@wellmanwilson.com if you would like to receive this directly. She will also be conducting free audits for organizations that want to assess their needs in preparing for the legislation going into effect on July 1.

Member Minute – Golsa (Goldie) Ghamari

Goldie’s always had an interest creating a business where she could help other people. She decided that the best way to achieve this goal was to go to law school and eventually start her own practice – and this is exactly what she did. Goldie’s litigation and advocacy practice allows her to help professionals, business owners, companies and entrepreneurs with various legal issues, including contract drafting, contract disputes, commercial lease issues, property concerns as well as legal strategy and negotiation advice during the litigation process.

Since becoming a lawyer, she has opened her own law practice and is now running a successful litigation and advocacy firm based out of Downtown Ottawa. She isn’t running a traditional brick and mortar business, however. Recognizing that most of her clients are busy professionals with places to go and people to see, she caters to their schedules by meeting them at their offices or even half-way at a favourite coffee shop or restaurant. She only spends on average 2 days in her office (unless she has an upcoming trial at court).  With the use of cloud computing and technology, she is able to assist her clients from anywhere in Ottawa and, in fact, the world.

When she is not working, Goldie likes to spend her time volunteering in the community. She is on the Board of Directors of the Ottawa Community Immigrant Services Organization, a non-profit that helps new immigrants integrate into our community. She also participates in various charity runs to raise money for fantastic causes, such as “Run for the Animals”, where she jogs with her dog Baxter to raise money for homeless animals at the Ottawa Humane Society.

If she has any time left over, Goldie likes to spend it working out at the gym, trying new restaurants and wines, and travelling. Since joining the Women’s Business Network, she has been made to feel very welcome and has also met some fantastic people. She looks forward to making more connections and participating at future WBN events.
