Kim Allen-McGill
Music Educator
Musician at Silver Cadence Music

I am a life-long musician/pianist, choir director, and singer with more than 30 years of teaching experience. After a long and successful career in corporate communications and public relations, and raising a family, I FINALLY realized my dream of working as a music educator and music minister on a full-time basis. My music studio, Silver Cadence Music, is located in the Findlay Creek community.

I teach people of all ages to sing and play the piano, and offer planning and musical services for special celebrations like funerals, weddings, baptisms, and events (like Christmas carolling parties).

I am in my element when teaching others to play and sing their own song. Music lessons should be fun, and the learning opportunities are endless!

I have extensive training as a music enlivener and music minister. It is a special gift to be able to share my gifts and encourage others as a Director of Music and Choral Director at a small church in Ottawa.

As a volunteer, I love playing with my friends in our boomer rock and roll band, The FROGs. We play at coffee houses and community events.

There’s nothing cuter than my Kindersingers! This year we will sing in a brand new school, Vimy Ridge Public School. I’m delighted to have been welcomed as a volunteer in OCDSB schools for many years.

What do you hope to give or receive from your membership in the WBN?
The networking and professional development opportunities provided by the WBN gave me the courage, the positive support and the role models I needed to take the HUGE step of becoming self-employed and an entrepreneur. We are kindred spirits, even though we work in varied industries!

My favourite part of volunteering with the WBN has to be meeting new members and seeing them blossom and grow on their professional journeys, not to mention tearing around on a golf cart to raise money for women’s health. There isn’t anything more important than the subject of women’s health in my mind. Women do take care of everyone else!

What’s the business advice you would give today to your younger self?

Find your element. Keep exploring your interests and knocking on doors until you do. Walk through every open door!

Who would be invited to your dream dinner party?
Oprah. My motivational hour of power was her late afternoon show as I was nurturing and loving my colicky babies. I want to thank her for empowering so many women, including me! Talk about a lady that has overcome so many challenges and risen to the top of the pile. She’s pretty inspirational in my view.

What’s one thing people would be surprised to learn about you?
I am married to Santa Claus and the Easter Bunny (my husband works in costume at Hazeldean Mall)! My thrill of a lifetime was to perform on the stage of the National Arts Centre, and I did it! I got to go back to kindergarten last year and had the time of my life. I used to be terrified to speak and sing in public, now I love it!
